Starting today (May 19), Rocky View County (RVC) will see an extra level of protection from unsafe driving.

With endorsement from the county council and approval from Alberta Justice and Solicitor General, RVC peace officers now have full authority to enforce the Traffic Safety Act on all roadways within Rocky View County.

“Until now, our efforts were restricted to county roads and secondary highways,” says Lorraine Wesley, manager of RVC Enforcement Services. “Many residents were frustrated by the county’s inability to deal with dangerous driving practices on highways, even when they happened right in front of a patrol car.”

With their new scope, community peace officers can deal with speeding, distracted driving, running stop signs, and other Traffic Safety Act violations on any road, including primary highways.

Wesley says, “Traffic rules are in place to ensure public safety, and that remains the focus of our efforts. Tickets are 100 per cent avoidable if people simply follow the rules of the road. We want everyone to be safe this long weekend, and every day thereafter.”
