A group of Cochrane ladies came up with an idea over coffee one day that has helped brighten the day for many in our community.

Carey Wilkinson Lee says she was hanging out with some other local women when they made the choice to do something good for others and that's how Scatter Kindness Cochrane was formed.

"Just to get the idea that random acts of kindness can completely change the world and help a community bond and be happy. So it was just the idea of spreading kindness randomly and putting that into people's minds daily."

Before Christmas the group went around to 120 homes and randomly dropped off a bag of gift cards, treats and the Scatter Kindness Cochrane cards saying "You've been hit by Kindness".

Wilkinson Lee says "Lots of local companies have been really supportive and given us gift cards. And it was actually $5 to $50, it was random so we weren't sure what gift cards we had in our packages."

She says last year they did something called Prom Project.

They teamed up with school staff to pick a student to totally gear them up for their graduation.

Local businesses pitched in to help with photography, eye lashes, make up, hair cuts and styles, local shops as well as Visa cards to help buy a dress or a tux.

She says they picked a student from each of the three local high schools.

"One student at the school that it's not about sports performance or academic marks. It's just about a student that is kind to the other kids and goes in and makes the building feel inclusive and safe for the other kids."

She says they are planning on doing that again this spring.

Wilkinson Lee says the group would like to challenge businesses to also spread some kindness and then take it a step further and challenge other local businesses to do something to spread kindness further.
