A woman believed to be in her 20's was taken to hospital in stable, non life-threatening condition after bear attack yesterday evening in Canmore.

Around 7:30 EMS were called to the Lowline Trail area, upon arrival they found a woman suffering from serious soft tissues injuries to her upper torso, resulting in internal injury.

The injured woman told EMS she had been biking in the area with a friend when they came across a black bear, which struck her as she attempted to ride away.

The bear was scared away by a friend she was with, who was able to deploy bear spray, the cyclists then managed to ride to an area where they were able to call for help.

Brendan Cox, Public Affairs Officer with Alberta Fish and Wildlife says the area is now closed.

"At this point officers are investigating, they have closed the Lowline Trail and the surrounding area. They are waiting for an opportunity to do a more formal interview with the victim, and after that we should have a clearer picture of what exactly happened."

Cox explains Fish and Wildlife needs to find out why the bear behaved the way it did; whether it was a natural reaction, or poses a risk to the public, once that's determined, officers will look into the next steps.

This is the second bear attack in Alberta in Just two days, another woman was attacked in the Waiporous Village area on Tuesday.
