Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre may become more accessible soon, as Seniors on the Bow are proposing the installation of a second elevator.

Ken Hutchinson, SOTB member and retired architect, proposed the elevator at council on June 27 asking for support for the lift which has been a request for many years.

Amelia Mount, Vice Chair of Seniors on the Bow, says it can be an onerous process for seniors to access the facility, which is located on the second floor on the Totem 2 Arena side.

"The current one is quite far away from SOTB, when you come up the elevator you have to walk down a long corridor and ramp," she explains. "For normal people it's not a big deal, but if you have any kind of mobility, issues it's a chore to walk down there. It' been a problem from day one when we first moved down to Spray Lake."

She adds the childcare facility in SLSFSC is also on the second floor, so it would be a great second option for parents with strollers and babies should the other lift break down.

The elevator is estimated to cost around $195,000, SLSFSC obtained $55,000 through Federal and local grants for the elevator. SOTB is willing to chip in an extra $25,000 to make it happen.

Mount shares the facility would like the Town of Cochrane, and donations from other organizations, to help pay for the remaining $115,000, and she may be in luck.

Council discussed looking to see if they have room in their 2017 budget.

"It's a big step, moving forward."
