When English author and journalist Robert Nurden researched the extraordinary life of his grandfather Stanley James, he discovered a man far different than what he had expected.

The Stockmen's Memorial Foundation is giving people the chance to learn more about James and his life in a free Zoom presentation with Nurden, author of the book "Between Heaven and Earth: A Journey with My Grandfather."

Nurden will give a presentation on Fri. Feb. 26 at 1:30 p.m. from his home in England.

The book retraces the many adventures and scandalous activities of his grandfather, who spent time in Alberta in the late 1800s in Alberta, trying his hand as a cowboy, shepherd, and Calgary newspaperman. This included time in the Jumping Pound area Southwest of Cochrane.

Stanley returned to England and became a nonconformist minister.

It was only after his death that hundreds of secret letters were discovered that shed a different light upon James.

Stockmen's executive director Scott Grattridge says Nurden's presentation will focus on his time in Alberta. It's an interactive presentation that includes a Q&A.

Nurden is an English author and journalist who has worked for many UK publications, including the Guardian and Daily Telegraph.  He made two trips to Alberta, including stops in the Cochrane area, in recent years to research the book and retrace the footsteps of his grandfather.
