Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for areas in and around Cochrane. 

According to the national weather service there is a chance that severe thunderstorms will develop that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

The thunderstorm is expected to develop early this afternoon.

Several areas in and around Cochrane are included in this watch:

  • Rocky View Co. near Cochrane 
  • Rocky View Co. near Bottrel and Madden
  • Rocky View Co. near Airdrie and Crossfield
  • Mountain View Co. near Carstairs and Stirlingville
  • Mountain View Co. near Cremona and Water Valley
  • Mountain View Co. near Olds and Didsbury
  • Mountain View Co. near Sundre

Environment Canada reminds us that severe storms can come with large hail that can damage property and cause injuries. Strong winds can wreak havoc by tossing loose objects, damaging weak buildings and breaking tree branches. People are also being asked to be aware of the dangers of lightning which kills and injures Canadians every year.

Environment Canada is recommending people to seek shelter and wait out any storms and stay tuned to local media for updates.
