Shaun Fluker announced today that he is seeking the nomination as the Alberta NDP candidate in
Airdrie-Cochrane for the next provincial election.

An associate professor of law at the University of Calgary, Fluker believes the next provincial election will be a pivotal moment for Alberta.

"Over the last three years, I've just watched the UCP government attack and dismantle public institutions that matter in this province, so I'm happy to put my name forward and try to generate some interest in the Alberta NDP in Airdrie-Cochrane and hope we can put a challenge towards Peter Guthrie."

He points to how the UCP has failed Albertans by making drastic cuts to investment in post-secondary institutions, implementing a flawed K-12 curriculum, fighting with physicians during a global pandemic, privatizing provincial parks, establishing expensive user fees in Kananaskis Country, eroding trust in the governance of public service pensions, and has failed to address the funding needs of municipalities.

He says there have been an impressive number of people seeking nominations for the party. Yesterday, the Banff-Kananaskis NDP constituency association selected Dr. Sarah Elmaligi as their candidate from a slate of four.

"Alberta's NDP this strikes me as a government in waiting, and I think you're seeing that with the number of high-quality candidates putting their names forward to seek nomination for the party. It's a really positive message going forward."

He joins Steve Durrell in the race, who made his intentions known in mid-January.

The date of the nomination meeting is expected to be announced soon.
