Two Cochrane residents were part of the silver medal men’s team at the Inter-Provincial floor shuffleboard tournament in Moose Jaw, SK, July 10-14.

Walter Chadwick and Doug Campbell, both of Cochrane, joined Frank Stokoswki, of Red Deer, and Howard Dugan, of St. Albert, to finish second in the 5th annual tournament. They were part of the two-team contingent sent from Alberta to compete against entries from Nova Scotia, Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

In the four-day tournament they faced the nine other teams in the men's division, winning 21 out of a possible 28 matches, with the eventually men's gold medalists, a Manitoba entry,  giving them the toughest time.

Both qualified for the tournament after advancing from a qualifer held in Innisfail, May 9. Oddly enough, the pair were from Cochrane but had never met before the Innisfail event. Chadwick is a Snowbird who competes regularly in tournaments while escaping annually to Yuma. In fact, Campbell was under the impression all off the Inter-Provincial players, excluding himself, were snowbirders with a wealth of experience.

The other Alberta's men's team finished with 14 win. There were also two women’s teams representing Alberta, one of which claimed silver.

Manitoba also came out on top in the women's divisions. Bronze medals went to Ontario in men's and Saskatchewan in women's.

To help grow floor shuffleboard in Cochrane, Campbell says an introductory program is in the works for September through mid-October and about 20 participants are required to make it a reality.
