Combining basketball with fundraising for Philippines typhoon victims has proven to be a slam dunk for the Filipino Canadian Association of Cochrane Alberta (FCACA).

FCACA president Mike Bautista says they raised $315 from Hoops for Hope on Feb. 27.

About 24 youth enjoyed two hours of instruction from the coaching team of the Filipino Canadian Basketball Academy (FCBA) Blizzards. The $15 fee, in turn, will assist victims of Typhoon Odette.

"The kids are having fun," says Baptiste, pointing to the gym of the SLS Family Sports Centre. "At the same time, they're helping the Philippines."

Alex Tumang, of REMAX First, has been a huge supporter of the endeavours of Cochrane's Filipino community for some time. Like most Filipinos, he's passionate about basketball, but that isn't the only reason he provides sponsorships.

"I think the Filpino community here is one of the best. Their passion to help one another is an inspiration."

"They want to help not just the Filipino community, but the Cochrane community as a whole. Truly inspiring."

Bautista says they have one more fundraising event in the works. Stay tuned.
