A kind-hearted local woman reminds us that a little goes a long way.

Melanie Meert, a former senior home worker, knows how tricky it can be to visit seniors, especially, over the holidays. She has created a program that allows Cochrane residents to ‘Adopt a Grandparent’ and bring some much needed joy to deserving seniors.

Residents can Adopt a Grandparent by donating $20 which is matched by Meert. Each adopted senior receives a beautifully wrapped hand cream with an uplifting hand crafted card made by local children.

Meert, says a week before Christmas she dresses her young elves up in festive attire and sets off with packages of joy to visit unsuspecting seniors, who are beyond delighted to have smiling children delivering unexpected gifts.

“The response was phenomenal. The seniors were absolutely lit up to see the children all dressed up. I really think it was the visit and the thought that meant the most to them.”

This is the second year that this program has been running and Meert hopes to exceed last years ‘adoption’ of 80 seniors. She is thrilled with the response and is thankful to have this opportunity

The last day to Adopt a Grandparent is December 15. To find out more information you can email Meert at meert15@hotmail.com.
