Crews have begun work to remove ice from the Sunset Ridge storm pond in an effort to eliminate a foul odour in the area.

"To expedite the ice melt and help vent off the vapors produced by decaying vegetation underneath the ice, Cochrane Operations will be removing portions of the ice on the south end of the upper Sunset stormwater facility with an excavator on Friday, April 21," reads a statement on the Town of Cochrane's website.

"Please avoid the area during the ice removal and expect pathway closures in the area until we are free and clear of ice on the pond."

The nearby playground around the pond will be temporarily closed for up to three weeks to ensure community safety.

"Operations will be installing an aeration system in the pond in the spring of 2023 to fully mitigate any future concerns in this matter."
