It's day two of the 10th Annual Nissan Super Seniors Squares Spiel that has kicked off the Cochrane bonspiel season.

What makes it 'super' is how it allows 152 curlers, ages 50 to 88, to enjoy curling against their peers in both competitive and sociable categories.

"We put peer groups together, and that's why we call it the Seniors Square spiel," explains event chair and founder Doug Campbell. "We have seven squares with at least five teams in each square, so they only play people in the age bracket and same skill level."

"We have 55-year-olds playing against 55-year-olds, all the way up to 85-year-olds playing against 85-year-olds."

This year, Cochrane Nissan signed on for five years as the title sponsor. They are joining some 31 other generous retailers who support the bonspiel.

Shawn Young, of Cochrane Nissan, says upon opening the auto dealership they were looking for ways to could reach out to the community. This was among them.

"It looked like a really good opportunity to help them out while getting our name out in the community," says Young.

Bob Head, who approached them with the idea, is thrilled.

"It means that our organization can plan five years knowing that we are going to have the support of a very astute local business. So it’s very important to us as a senior bonspiel committee."

Yes, curling can be competitive, but it's always sociable. Friday night features a banquet and evening entertainment.

Saturday night features the final games, fun, and prizes. There will be cash prizes for the top two teams in each of the four social squares and the top three teams in each of the three competitive squares.

"We encourage any interested people to come down and watch," says Campbell.
