On Saturday July 23, the Cochrane Public Library will be transformed into a time ruled by King's and Queen's.

Cochrane's inaugural Medieval Day Festival is making final preparations for it's interactive journey back in time.

Event organizer Gail Ames says plans are coming together.

"Things are going great, it is getting a little hectic with all the last minute things we have to do, but we're pulling it together."

Ames says there are some new additions to the event.

"We have added a few more demonstrations, so we have two spinning wheels now, a leather maker who's going to demonstrate how to make a leather mask, and also a company that is going to set up a loom and do some weaving."

Ames says although it was initially slow to pull in demonstrators and vendors, things have certainly changed.

"I think word of mouth got out there and it is now booming."

As far as a timeline, Ames shares the knights and vikings will be performing throughout the day in their arena, and an entertainment stage will host music, storytelling and skits. Mayor Ivan Brooker and his wife Tracy Brooker will be crowned 'King and Queen' of Medieval Festival, and will be judging the costume contest.

Putting on a Medieval Festival at the library not only attracts community members to the central hub, but also encourages an element of learning, shares Ames.

"The more people we can get into the library especially the kids reading, the families reading it is so important. This is like going back in time so for the kids  it is like saying this is what it was like back then; so I think that is important to get them interested in history, and reading, and doing some research of their own."

Medieval Day Festival runs Saturday July 23, 10 am to 4 pm.
