During the COVID-19 update today (Thursday, October 7), the province announced help for businesses to implement the vaccine Restrictions Exemption Program.

Following town hall meetings with Alberta businesses, Minister of Jobs, Economy, and Innovation, Doug Schweitzer explained the government’s plan to help Alberta businesses to implement the Restrictions Exemption Program (REP).  Steps that will offset the cost of the implementation plus support for employers and employees.

Schweitzer says, “Alberta businesses have done their part time and time again. We’ve been committed to listening to Alberta businesses throughout the pandemic, and we’re taking action to respond to their needs. These new supports will help with the costs businesses incur to implement the proof of vaccination measures.”

Businesses following the REP will be eligible for the REP Implementation Grant of a one-time grant payment of $2000 to help offset enforcement costs.

As well, a de-escalation training program is being prepared by the government to equip businesses and employees to deal with the implementation of the restriction exemption program. One million dollars is available to businesses for training to support the safety of workers when implementing the Restriction Exemption Program. This includes being able to handle situations and providing positive communication. The program was described as being similar to the ProServe Liquor Training Program. 

The province will introduce legislation to protect businesses that require employees to be fully vaccinated.

Heftier fines will be put in place to protect employees from confrontations from customers the fine will double from $2000 to $4000.
