Drastically fluctuating temperatures and weather conditions aren't uncommon here in Cochrane.

So far April 2021 has been more calm than storm, with temperatures hitting the double digits half of the 21 days in.

Cochranites can look forward to another dose of summerlike temperatures this afternoon, and then our weather story is going to change significantly overnight.

Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist, Janelle Gergely says that we can expect some active weather to start by this evening.

"We're watching a cold front swing through the province, it's already making its way into Northern Alberta now, " says Gergely. "When you wake up tomorrow you're likely going to see some snow. Temperatures are going to plummet and there's going to be some gusty Northerly winds to accompany that as well."

Those plummeting temperatures will drop by close to 20 degrees by tomorrow, and Northerly winds gusting to 50 km/hr may contribute to poor driving conditions and reduced visibility.

Gergely says that the snowfall is expected to continue until about noon tomorrow.

"With this cold front the snow will really only be for tonight and into tomorrow morning and then we're going to see some improvement going into Friday," explains Gergely.

By Friday we'll get a break from the snow and temperatures are expected to rise slightly above the freezing mark. However, Gergely says that too will be short-lived.

"Unfortunately, we're watching another system come in that's likely going to bring more snow to the area on Saturday as well as Sunday," says Gergely. "It will be a very short reprieve from the snow, and the cold weather is going to stick around for a little while now."

Gergely says that while the fluctuating weather may not be welcomed with open arms, it's pretty typical for this time of year. She recommends keeping those winter tires on for a little while longer.
