The Cochrane Endurance Project kicked off their track season at the CALTAF Classic E Meet on June 13 at the Foothills Athletic Park.

Head coach Travis Cummings calls it a great opening weekend for their first day of club competition in 1 1/2 years.

Jessica Kaiser, Annika Fines, Makenna Myatt, Terrell Keys, Brendan Maguire, Nick Hooper, and Clay Grattidge all ran 800s, five setting best personal times (PB).

The same weekend, Caden Jones, Brady Malley, and Eric Swedlo ran the 5km at Footstock here in Cochrane.

"I'm very happy with how things went," says head coach Travis Cumings. "I'm proud of the execute and proud that they came out and, even with the inexperience and with the modified season, came through and had fun."

"But it's just a start. We've got more racing to go, and we started on a good note."

For most, it was their first race in a non-time-trial environment. Cummings believes they have tons remaining in the tank, with many tactical improvements to make for future races.

Coach Cumming provided the highlights.

  • U18 Girls - Annika Fines, 5th overall, 2:25.93 (PB and first real 800m race other than a few interclub time trials); Makenna Myatt, 11th overall.
  • U18 Boys - Terrell Keys, 2:07.39, 7th PB; Nick Hooper, 2:08.12 PB; Clay Grattidge, 2:09.37 PB; Brendan Maguire, 2:14.01 PB.
  • Open Women - Jess Kaiser 2:23.78 8th. 4 seconds off her PB.

As well, team members Caden Jones, Brady Malley, and Eric Swedlo all ran the 5km at Footstock.

Up next is the CALTAF Cheetah provincial championships for U10 to U14 and CALTAF Mile on June 26. That's followed by Gord's Running Store Meet #1 on June 29.
