Less than a month ago, Cochrane's Tyler Wong was named the WHL's Humanitarian of the Year. Now the former Lethbridge Hurricanes captain has been awarded the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) humanitarian award.

Wong established himself as an exceptional ambassador for the Hurricanes and the league both on and off the ice.

The 21-year-old carried forward the ‘Canes KidSport program he introduced a year ago which donates $5 to KidSport Lethbridge & Taber for each goal he scores.  Powered by 51 goals of his own and with the help from teammates, alumni, and the community, the initiative surpassed all expectations and raised over $13,000 this season.

Wong believes in giving back and regularly volunteered elsewhere in the community. He was part of the Hurricanes Spread Christmas Cheer in support of local food banks in southern Alberta, volunteered as a teacher’s assistant in a local classroom, served as a volunteer on-ice instructor for a number of minor hockey teams and worked with the Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association to help individuals with mental and physical disabilities through horseback riding.

Wong has twice been named WHL Humanitarian of the Year and was the league's eastern conference recipient for three years. In addition, he was the Fan Favourite in Lethbridge ever season he hit the ice for the Hurricanes. He was so respected in Lethbridge community that a long line of fans came to say goodbye and thank him on his last day at the ENMAX Centre. He was also awarded the key to the city.

Wong received the CHL award on May 27 in Windsor, ON.
