David Lertzman, a man who was tragically killed by a bear in the Waiparous area earlier this week, "suffered very little."

In a post, his wife Sarah replays the past 36 hours, in what she describes as the "most difficult post I will ever write" -- still she finds comfort in learning further details from officials after conducting a thorough investigation.

Sarah Lertzman shares that while trail running on May 4, David "was attacked by a bear from behind and pushed off a very high [300 meters] embankment" and was later found near the river.

She says that David's wounds were consistent with "an instantaneous death" and it's believed that he suffered very little.

At 11:57 p.m on May 4, Sarah called the Cochrane RCMP, after David had been missing for several hours. She says that she initially searched for him on her own before filing a report.

"I had searched for him myself for two hours early in the night and walked right past the point of attack and saw no sign of it," she says. "I was looking for a man in trouble and not for a scene of something that had happened."

At approximately 2:14 a.m. police were successful in locating David's body just off of Moss trail near Waiparous Creek.

The area remains closed as Alberta Fish and Wildlife continue to search for the bear.

Determined to be at the side of her "beloved partner" Sarah says she "was able to be with his beautiful form and sit with him for the night."

Sarah says that the past few days have been both "tremendously challenging and cathartic" and she thanks the "community that so loved this great man."
