Cochrane and Area Victim Services is looking to expand their volunteer base.

Currently running with a rotation of 3 teams of 7 volunteers, Victim Services is hoping to end up with 4 teams of 10.

Sabrine Koudmani, Cochrane and Area Victim Services, Program Coordinator, says they welcome individuals who are passionate, and interested in a longer- term commitment.

"We would love to have as many volunteers as we possibly could, there are so many things that they could do within the organization that would add value."

Victim Services provides support, referrals, and information to victims of crime, tragedy, and misfortune; Koudmani shares the organization is not a counselling service but will refer those in need to the right resources or agencies.

"Our volunteer advocates are on call after hours and weekends. If called out by the RCMP, the advocates provide victims with support in the immediate moments of crisis and also give them support after the fact."

Support throughout the court process is also a service provided by Victim Services who help victims understand the process and expectations of court.

"That could look like accompanying a victim to court, liaising with crown on victim wishes, or testimony prep with a victim."

Call numbers for the local organization are growing; in 2015 Victim Services worked on roughly 500 files, to date, they have matched the amount.

Economics, growth, and refining processes have attributed to the increase, says Koudmani.

"It's really multi faceted, with the economic downturn we saw an increase (in files) especially those related to domestic violence, to which stress in the home can be a huge contributor. The way we interact with the RCMP and the Crown has been refined, which has contributed partially to the rise in file numbers. Finally, the population in Cochrane is another factor we are attributing the growth in files to."

Koudmani shares while the security clearance process is lengthy to become a volunteer, it is well worth it.

"The people who volunteer for us are incredibly special; it's a great environment you learn a lot about your community about yourself, it's an incredible opportunity to make connections with other people who have a passion for helping and and as well to give back to your community."

Koudmani suggests if you are interested in volunteering you can call them at 403-851-8055 for more information.
