Children and their parents got to enjoy that new school smell this morning with today's opening of the Holy Spirit School in the Fireside neighbourhood.

A brief opening ceremony was held on the school's tarmac before students eagerly headed to their new classrooms while parents got their first look at what's been under construction for about two years.

It was only two weeks ago that the school was turned over to the Calgary Catholic School District, and since then the school's staff has been working long, feverish hours to prepare for today.

The opening was special for Michelle Hoogveld, district chaplain for the Calgary Catholic School District. It was the first time she has attended the opening day of a new school in over 20 years with the school district and was looking forward to touring the facility.

The entire community will also be able to check it out at a public open house on Tuesday, Sept. 13 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Holy Spirit will initially open as K to 6 and will include junior high students in the future.
