Rocky View County councillor Samanntha Wright says she has no intention of resigning on Jan. 28 as demand by county council.

Instead, she intends to fight it, tooth and nail, alongside an earlier call for her resignation on a different matter.

On Jan. 20, RVC council called for her resignation because of unpaid property taxes on a property she owns with her husband.

The Division 8 (Bearspaw) councillor confirms she had no advance indication of what the special meeting was for, and was shellshocked to discovered the taxes were unpaid. They were paid immediately after the meeting but the call for her resignation stands.

"If this is the route they want to go, then we're going to be vigorously defending my seat on council," says Wright. "I guess we're going to be going to court."

"I feel bad for the taxpayers because I think it's a waste of money. They want me to disqualify myself, and that's not going to happen."

Earlier this month, the county council called for her resignation, saying she failed to disclose a pecuniary interest when she participated in public hearings, discussions, and votes concerning a property immediately adjacent to hers.

Wright refused to resign, saying she did her due diligence, and claims she does not have a pecuniary interest in the matter.

Wright is flabbergasted by the ongoing attacks.

"It's difficult to view it as anything other than a concerted effort to discredit me. I think that my lawyers even said that in the peculiar interest that I read out. It's really hard to see it as anything but."

The county has already filed for a ruling from the Court of Queen's Bench on the first matter.
