If you like to belt out tunes in the shower or car, you may want to check out Cochrane's newest choir.
Cool Choir isn't like your 'traditional' choir says, Jamie Serafi, Creative Director. "It's a new modern concept in choirs which removes the stigma around what it takes to be in a choir. When you think about a choir you may have thought of a more elitist thing where you have to be classicly trained, able to read music and be a really good singer; where cool choir flips that concept on its head altogether."
Attracting singers to join is made easy, shares Serafi, as the repertoire of music consists of songs that people are already belting out when they are alone. "We sing the kind of songs people are already listening to in their cars like songs by Adelle, Michael Jackson, Coldplay, The Carpenters, The Beatles and all kinds of rock and pop music from the last 50 or 60 years."
No auditioning is required and as long as you can speak you can sing. "You don't have to read music either. The whole emphasis of this is around a fun, energetic, and feel good night out where you are making friends, laughing and singing."
Singing is also gaining increased recognition for its health benefit, states Serafi. "The health benefits of singing are really coming to the forefront for people who are going through anxiety, depression, and bereavement and they really revel in this fun, energetic night out once a week."
With churches having great acoustics, Cochrane's Cool Choir sessions will be held at St.Mary's Parish from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m on Monday evenings and there is no cap placed on the number of people who can join, as long as you are over the age of 18.
Before you commit, Serafi encourages those interested to come out any (one) Monday for a free taster evening. "You can come out any week of our ten week trimester and just come and take part in any weekly rehearsal where you will be welcomed to the room and made to feel comfortable."
After your free session, you can join up as a member by paying a weekly nominal subscription fee which also allows you to join Cool Choir's other locations in Airdrie and Hawkwood (Calgary). "Once you join the choir you can come and sing at any of the three choirs which also makes us unique. So if you can't make Cochrane on a Monday, you can go to Airdrie on Tuesday, or Hawkwood (northwest Calgary) on Wednesday. So to come and sing for up to six hours a week, the weekly cost is $20."
Holding their inaugural trimester in Cochrane last fall, Cool Choir brought out roughly thirty performers but they would love to see the program grow. So if you are looking for an energetic night out, where you can unleash your secret superstar amongst other like-minded people, Serafi, says plan to come out and give them a try.
Cool Choir also plans to be a big part of the community it calls home and plans to bring their performances to many Cochrane events for added entertainment value without costing anyone a dime.
