Play resumes this morning in the Alberta Junior Female Hockey League’s (AJFHL) Western Showcase at the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre.

Play kicked off last night with the Cochrane Chaos downing the visiting Manitoba Grey Owls, 6-2, in one of the opening matchups. In other games, the North Elite beat the Fort Saskatchewan Fury, 4-0, Airdrie Jags beat the South Elite, 5-3, and the Sherwood Park Steele squeezed by the Calgary Titans, 5-4.

The Chaos play their final round-robin game today at 3:45 p.m. against the Fort Saskatchewan Fury.

It's the first time the tournament has come south since launched by the AJFHL and is a final kick at the season for some league teams while opening the door to graduating midget players. Up and coming players are included on north and south teams and it’s from here the league will draw some of its future talent.

The tournament is divided into two pools of eight teams to determine the pecking order for the playoffs on Sunday. The Chaos and their northern rivals, the Sherwood Park Steele, are in opposing pools and there’s the potential for a rematch between the two finalists of the AJFHL championship series. The Steele recently claimed their second consecutive championship in three games straight against the Chaos and you can bet the Cochrane team would like one final shot at them.

Totem One and Two arenas will feature nonstop hockey all day today until about 8:30 p.m. The Chaos are on the ice now for their second matchup against the North Elite and take on the Fort Saskatchewan Fury at 3:45 p.m. All their games are at Totem One.

Playoff matchups will be determined by the end of play today.

Besides the hockey, there’s a giant raffle table and silent auction just outside of Totem One and 50-50 draws. Today also features a marketplace with about 14 vendors.
