Lacrosse athlete Annie Morrison has been named Cochrane Now's Sports Star of the Month for October.

Annie, 19, is an accomplished athlete who has excelled at every sport she has attempted, but her passion is lacrosse. She started playing box lacrosse at about age 12 and played for the Rage, then Silvertips. She went on to play field lacrosse in Calgary with ELEV8 when they introduced their girls' program.

With an ELEV8 Elite team, she competed for the President's Cup in Florida three consecutive years and caught the eye of several American university coaches. She was left choosing between several universities and accepted a scholarship at Fresno State University. She'll be playing there with the Bulldogs for the next four seasons while completing her studies in Exercise Sciences and Kinesiology.

Annie has no regrets her choice. She says its great team and enjoys the university community there.

"I really like the university," says Annie. "I'm living with three of my teammates in an apartment. I enjoy that. I've grown up with brothers all of my life so it's kind of like having sisters, I think, which is a bit different."

She enjoyed many other sports here in Cochrane, including swimming, soccer, volleyball and basketball but lacrosse became her sport of choice.

"The first thing that I really liked was playing with a lot of my friends in a great team environment where everybody was working hard and wanted to be there. I really enjoyed that."

Playing field lacrosse offered some new challenges for the skilled athlete.

"The biggest challenge this fall figuring where to be on the field and what to do and when to do it. I kind of struggled with that because it's a much bigger space."

Annie was selected from the numerous nominations received for the monthly award. Her nominator, Heather Greenan, spoke highly of Annie.

"She is incredibly dedicated to her training and team," wrote Heather in her letter of nomination."She works hard and deserves every success she has earned."

Cochrane Now salutes Dairy Queen, A&W and Cochrane Awards and Promotion for making this monthly award possible.
