The Cochrane Cougars Rec Hockey League are hosting their second annual fundraiser this Saturday night (March 11).

Rec hockey is growing, and the demand for kids to play in a fun, less pressured environment is key. Cheryl Mckay, Program Coordinator, says while kids learn the same skills as minor hockey, the goal of the league is to keep it affordable and a little less time consuming for busy families.

"We do a lot of very similar programming to minor hockey, our kids practice once a week and play a game once a week. We focus on the fundamentals of hockey, we focus on teaching them the skills they will need, and in a less demanding environment."

Currently the league has 84 registered players who hit the ice both indoors and out to enjoy the love of the game.

Fundraising will help keep registration close to the current price of $395, and offset additional costs like tournament fees and other expenses.

"All the money from the fundraiser goes to keeping our fees reasonable. We use the funds for things like tournament costs, equipment costs, ice costs, essentially we don't want parents worrying about those extra costs once they paid their full registration fees; so the remaining part of the season is just about playing hockey."

Last year the league brought in roughly $3000, and Mckay hopes to exceed that this year.

Saturday evening's entertainment at the Texas Gate includes dinner, a drink, door prize entry, laughs with Yuk Yuk performers, and an opportunity to win some great raffle prizes like hockey tickets, jerseys, gift certificates and a PS4.
