The Cochrane High School track and field team were awarded their second banner in two weeks and now 27 of their athletes are heading to compete in 29 events at the provincials in Edmonton, June 2-3.

The Cobras won the track and field banner for 3A South Central Zone, May 23, just a week after winning the Rocky View divisional banner. They accumulated 451.5 points, 259.5 points more than second place Brooks Composite.

It isn't unusual for the Cobras to be a dominating force at the divisionals or zones, but head coach Esther Sieben is especially impressed with the athletes heading to the provincials.

"We've got a great team," says Sieben. " We have a lot of depth, I find, and they just work hard. The kids who trained and worked hard are the ones that are moving on to provincials. It was just a great day all around."

There were numerous gold, silver and bronze performances at the zones and those finishing in the top two earn a berth into the provincials. Some are competing in multiple disciplines and they include Brady Church, Matt Clooten, Kareem Grant, Ann Roth, Skylar Sieben and Kiki Alexander.

Of their eight relay teams, six are advancing to compete in intermediate and senior boys and junior and senior girls in addition to both of their 4x400 relay teams

Last year, Cochrane High returned with seven medals and two intellectual medals from the provincials and Sieben believes this could be another banner year for the team.

"We have some kids that can possibly get a bronze or silver or gold medal. I think we're going to have that kind of success this year," says Sieben. "I just can't wait to see what these kids are capable of. We're a very very strong, deep team."
