Cochrane riders will get a weekend off racing this weekend as Provincial Races 5 and 6 wrapped up in Airdrie over the long weekend.

Brad Christensen, President of Cochrane BMX, says he was surprised at the large crowd Airdrie pulled in. "Airdrie had big numbers over the long weekend so that was good to see. The sport of BMX is popular as ever."

Roughly 40 riders from Cochrane made up the 465 racing roster. "We had a big showing of our Cochrane riders go out and it was a really good showing by the local kids. There was a bunch of first timers out at the provincial races and that's what we really like to see."

Our Cochrane Club did pretty well with some riders taking home gold. "A couple of kids got their first golds. A little 5-year-old named Spencer, he is a 5 and under kid and new to BMX, he is having a really good time this year and ended up getting a gold on Saturday so that was really exciting for me. It is incredible, he's just ripping around the track and it's so fun to watch."

Christensen says the best part is watching all the kids progress in a relatively short period of time. "It is impressive, throughout the year you see these kids the ones that are just starting out at the start of the year and you see where they are now it's really impressive how quick these kids are picking up the sport and accelerating at the skill level they've got."

The Cochrane Club will race in races 7 and 8, the last races of the Provincial Series being held in St. Albert, August 19-20.
