The Bow Valley Bobcats 2-1 win over the Chestermere Cowboys sets up what Bobcats head coach Rob Makkreel predicted during the regular season, but it came one game sooner than he hoped.

The Bobcats overcame a 1-0 lead by Chestermere to win the quarterfinal matchup on home field, Oct. 12.

Makkreel said it was a tough game and he finds Chestermere had one of the strongest defenses in the Rocky View league this season and the last time the two meet it ended in a scoreless tie.

"It was a tough game," says Makkreel. "This is one of the more defensive teams. The two girls in their back end are really strong at clearing the ball."

A change in formation helped the Bobcats come out on top.

"We put more more pressure on their 'd' and then it slowly turned in our direction in the second half."

Sydney Perron tied the game for the Bobcats and the winner was scored by Jaeden Hiebert.

After the Bobcats 1-0 loss to the Cobras earlier this season Makkreel knew they would get a second crack at playing the Cobras. Last year, the Bobcats beat the Cobras in the semifinals and went on to win the silver medal.

"I knew we would. We normally we do. You're hoping later but you try your best and do what you can. It was a very defensive game against them last time."

There's been many scoreless ties in the Bobcats' regular season and with their strong back end they only allowed opponents to score twice early in the season in matches against Springbank and the crosstown Cobras. Since then, no one has been able to solve their defense until the Cowboys goal. But the Bobcats have also only scored eight goals in their 2-2-2 regular season.

In contrast, the Cochrane High Cobras have had lots of fire power, though most of it came in lopsided wins against the George McDougall Mustangs and WH Croxford Cavaliers. Those two games accounted for 25 of their 34 goals.

The Cobras finished on top with a 5-1 record, with their only loss coming against the Springbank Phoenix.

Besides the two local teams, it is the defending champion Phoenix that are in contention. They finished second with a 4-1-1 record and beat both the Bobcats and the Cobras. They lost to the Mustangs, 2-1, early in the regular season and the two meet again in the semi's.

The Bobcats-Cobras semifinal matchup goes Oct. 17 on the Ranger field at 4:30 p.m.
