The Bow Valley Bobcats varsity girls basketball team lost their first game but went on to win the rest to claim the consolation event at a Highwood High tournament last weekend in High River.

In the first game, the team was particularly feeling the impact of losing 6'1" centre Morgan Boot, recovering from an emergency appendectomy. Brooks keyed in on the Bobcats perimeter shooters and won 46-31.

Much experience was gained from the game, says head coach Kris Nielson.

"The encouraging part is that we were able to start to get our other two subs for Morgan up to speed at the 5 (centre) position and in the last two games," says Nielson.

The Bobcats went on to beat Eagle Butte, 40-39, and Edwin Parr Composite (Athabasca), 55-34, in the consolation final.

They won their opening game against  Eagle Butte, 61-54 but came against a strong Highwood team in their second matchup, losing 71-44, before contending for bronze.

Head coach Randy Perron says they learned a lot from the tournament and are already devising game plans should they matchup against Brooks, Highwood or Bobcats in the zone finals.

Besides this weekend's Strathmore tournament, Perron is looking forward to an upcoming Wetaskiwin tournament. The number two ranked St. Peter the Apostle Catholic High School team will be competing in the tourney.

Big Week Ahead as Playoffs Draw Near

It's a big weekend for both Bow Valley and Cochrane high school teams. They're all participating in the Strathmore tournament, which will decide the seeding in the upcoming zone finals.

Wednesday night both the Cobras and Bobcats varsity girls team play their final game in Rocky View divisional play. Playoff quarterfinals are Feb. 27 and one of the two teams will get a bye into the Mar. 1 semifinals.

The Bobcats are on the road to face the Springbank Phoenix and the Cobras are hosting the George McDougall Mustangs.
