The boys high school rugby team is on a roll and remains undefeated in the early goings, but they have some stiff competition ahead of them.

"They're doing very well and I'm quite impressed by them," says head coach Karl Bauer. "I'm interesting to see how they do in our next couple of major competitions."

The Bears dominated Banff in a 31-5 routing, May 3, and the weekend before won two, tied one in the Irish Icebreaker tournament.

A major part of the club's strategy for the season is to continue to develop their younger players and  the match against the Bears offered plenty of opportunities to do just that.

"I was really impressed especially since we started a good lot of our juniors," says Bauer. "We tried to limit some of our grade 12s' playing time because we knew Banff wasn't going to be necessarily the strongest.  We figured we needed the extra play time for some of those guys."

The Irish tournament also provided field experience for their second stringers and the proof is in the pudding.

"I thought the tournament prepared a lot of those guys for the (Banff) game and they really stepped up and I'm really quite proud of them."

The Bears are off to Okotoks on Wednesday for a rematch with Holy Trinity and Bauer is curious about the outcome.

"It's going to be a tough playing HolyTrinity on their field. Our last game against them was really tight so I'm looking forward to that rematch."

Then it's off to a Rocky View Sports sevens tournament in Springbank on Friday.

" It's  a really good idea for tournament because by the sounds of it Bert Church and Crossfield are both putting a team in and this will be their first year of ever having any rugby at all, so that will be good for them.

The girls Wild had a tough match, losing to their Banff opponents, 24-5. They played in a Springbank tournament on Friday.
