There were no surprises in the Cochrane Cobras domination of the Bow Valley Bobcats in the tier 3 championship game of the Rocky View Sports (RVS) football league, Nov. 4.

The Cobras won 51-0 by using a blend of their starters and junior players. They took a healthy 37-0 by the half then scored a major in both the third and fourth quarter.

The Bobcats offense sputtered but quarterback Austin Javorsky had what was likely the longest and strongest offensive play of the game when he grabbed the ball in the end zone and worked his way to about the Cobras 25 yard line before being stopped by Cobras defensive back Derek Lenson.

Cobras co-coach Rob McNab, who handles the team's offense, agrees the win wasn't surprising, but said they prepared the same way they do for any game.

"We just prepared and we knew they were banged a little bit and had some injury issues so we got all our kids in and had a good time."

From the beginning, they weaved their junior plays in and out of the play.

"You want to keep them warm, because if you throw them in the second half then the JVs are frozen, although it turned out to be a nice day."

Co-coach Bruce O'Neill, who heads the Cobras defense, says the team really wanted the win.

"I thought Bow Valley played hard but our kids really wanted it. They were out here on Friday night and shovelled the whole field."

Bobcats co-head coach Cam Cote says facing the Cobras in their first year of tier 3 ball was a challenge but he sees bright things on the horizon with a strong core of grade 10s and 11s having another year under their belt.

"We had a great season, I'm very proud of the guys. They showed so much heart, even up to the last play. The game was determined quite early on, they fought to the bitter end."

"That's the story of the team. A great bunch of kids with heart, never heard a word of complaint, didn't matter whether they were winning or losing they fought to the bitter end and they just liked being together. I think a lot of friendships were made and a lot of memories were made, so they'll carry forward a lot of positives."

There's lots of strides made this season, he says, including two wins against tier 2 teams and several budding players.

"We'll keep working on it, building it. We grew our coaching staff, we grew our numbers; there were lots of positives."

The game was Bobcats Javorsky's last appearance as a Bobcat and he speaks highly of the Bobcats football program.

I'm proud of our season, We did good, we finished strong. That last quarter was our best quarter of football of the season."

Next spring, he's looking forward to trying out for the Senior Bowl team and the Calgary Colts junior football team.

Cobras vs Brooks Buffalos

The #1 ranked Cobras now advance to the regional semifinals of the provincials this weekend against the #8 ranked Brooks Buffalos this Saturday in Brooks.

The Cobras head coaches are expecting a challenge against the Buffalos and say they are very similar to the red and white.

"I can't see a weakness on their defense," says offensicecoordinator McNabb. "We're just going to have to be really solid and get first downs and stay on the field and try and wear them down a little bit," says McNab.

"They'll be a big challenge, they've been improving over the years and it's going to be a great game I think. The two teams are very similar in my mind. Now we're going down to their home and they're going to want to protect that house."

O'Neill says Brooks has a tough offense and expects it to be a challenge.

"Brooks is very good and they have two really good running backs, good quarterback and good receiving corps. Like Rob says, they're a lot like us. They play fast, they play aggressively, they throw, they run, and they have an o-line that can block and we're going to be in for a challenge."

The winner will play either the #2 ranked Cardston Cougars or #6 ranked Sylvan Lake Lakers. Should the Cobras beat Brooks they'll have home field advantage in the south final.
