The Doug Campbell rink has advanced to the provincials after recently winning the Zone 2 qualifier of Alberta 55+ Sports.

The 55+ mixed team came out on top against their lone opponent in the qualifier held in Black Diamond, Nov. 15. Now they head to Cold Lake to compete in the Alberta 55+ Winter Games, Feb. 28 to Mar. 3. Should they succeed there, the Campbell rink will represent Alberta in the 2020 Canada 55+ Games being hosted by Kamloops, B.C.

Along with Campbell on the rink are lead Debra Nielsen, second Bob Bleaney and third Ingrid Schmidt.

There's a number of provincial qualifiers yet to take place across Zone 2 in advance of the Cold Lake games. This weekend the pickleball qualifier is being hosted by Strathmore and others, like cross-country and alpine skiing and hockey, take place early in the New Year. There's also cards and board games, snooker and creative competitions that continue until early in the New Year.

In all, there are 16 events included in the Cold Lake winter games and eight of them are qualifiers for the 2020 Canada Games.

Better known by some as Big Country, the zone stretches from the B.C. to Saskatchewan borders, with Sundre-Olds-Three Hills on its northern boundary and Black Diamond-High River on its southern border. Calgary is a separate zone and sits in the middle of Zone 2 like a doughnut.
