A five-game winning streak by the Cochrane Chaos has fuelled the climb to the top of the south division of the Alberta Junior Female Hockey League (AJFHL) and they now find themselves in a two-way tie with the Calgary Titans.

The Chaos doubled the Calgary Jags, 4-2, Dec. 8, in a game that saw the Chaos jump out to a 4-0 lead before the Jags responded late in the game.

Chaos head coach Derek Loomer says the Chaos dominated through most of the game and let their guard down near the end. They fired about 60 shots on Jags stellar goalie Shen Justason.

“The girls played a solid game and if not for Shen the score would have been a lot higher,” says Loomer.

The Chaos have some tough games ahead going into their final five of the regular season. The next two are against the Central Alberta Amazons, whom they overcame last season to finish first in the south and advance to the provincial final. Not far down the road is a final matchup against the league-leading and defending AJFHL champion Sherwood Park Steele, of the north division.

This Sunday’s game on neutral ground in Innisfail against the Amazons is their final before the Christmas break and the team hopes for a little redemption after losing to the Amazon in mid-November.

Former Chaos player Bre Martin is the Amazons’ top scorer with 14 goals and six assists and she was instrumental in the Amazons win over the Chaos, says Loomer.

“I think the girls will remember that and hopefully we can show up with a more consistent effort throughout our lineup and get them back on their heels this time.”

“Going into the break with a win is a key message we’re trying to get across to the girls this week.”

Momentum is building for the Chaos.

“It’s a little bit further into the season and the girls are starting to gel and we’re getting more in sync with the systems and working together and all pulling the same way. We’re starting to play games against teams in the south that we’re going to see a bit more of and maybe we’ll have a little bit more motivation in those and fewer surprises.”

The Chaos don’t return to Totem One until the final game of the regular season on Jan. 25 against the Calgary Titans.

Owen Moore Memorial Outdoor Classic

The Steele will be their opponent in the annual Owen Moore Memorial Outdoor Classic on Jan. 19 at the Springbank outdoor rink. The outdoor game offers a special game experience for the players and doubles as a fundraiser for the Calgary chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association.

“Everyone seems to have enjoyed it as a unique experience so we’re really looking forward to showcasing the teams on that outdoor rink again and trying to not only exposing our league but the mental health charities in Canada.”

Donations will be accepted at the game and there’s also a dinner after the game for which tickets are currently being sold.

“Come out and enjoy the game, donate if you can and come out with us for dinner afterward.”
