The growing depth of the Cochrane Chaos was evident in their season opener here in Cochrane, Friday night.

Seven goals by seven different players, including Cochrane's Brette Matheson, lead the team to a 7-0 win over the Calgary Warriors in an opening fanfare.

The Chaos dominated the play and riddled 59 shots at the Warriors goalie. They took a 1-0 lead in the first, then wrinkled the mesh four times in the second before capping it off with two more in the third. Chaos goalie Megan Parkyn blocked 19 shots for the shutout.

Head coach Derek Loomer says the team has more depth this season and believes their four lines can play with anyone.

"It's going to be a lot of fun if the girls stick with the process and continue to work together and develop through the year. The potential is there, we just have to harness it and bring it every game."

It was a three-point game for Mattheson, a stellar start for her return to the sport after her tenure with the Midget AAA Rocky Mt. Raiders ended two seasons ago. She opted out of her last year of midgets because she was starting her studies at the University of Calgary, although she did affilate with the Titans. Now in her third year, she got the itch to return to the ice and was encouraged by some Chaos players to try out.

"I missed it and with school it's a good stress reliever," says Matheson.

She also enjoys the level of play and is excited about the team's potential.

"I was surprised at how high the level is. It's so intense compared to triple A. It's really good hockey,"

"It was a lot of fun. We have a lot of work to do, but I think it will be a great year once we get to know everyone. It will be awesome."

Also joining the Chaos from Cochrane are Jenna Wasylik and Summer Gibbons. Kyla Kruger is returning for her second year with the club. Gibbons and Kruger both earned assists in the game.

The Chaos continued the tradition of celebrating opening night with the involvement of Cochrane Minor Hockey's female program. The young minor league players escorted the juniors on to the ice during introductions and participated in the ceremonial puck drop. They also scrimmaged during the first period intermission.

The Chaos are only in their second season but they already have alumni players and three of them participated in the ceremonial puck drop. Founding captain Carly Bursey, Morley's Lynelle Twoyoungmen and Shanelle Bjorndahl did the honours.

In last year's season opener the Chaos came away with a low scoring 2-1 overtime win.

"This one was a little bit different for the fans. We got another great crowd for the home opener. Instead of that tight close game we had last year we had a little bit more of a chance to show what we can do and have a little fun with it."

The Chaos are on the road Sunday to challenge the Calgary Titans. Their next home game is Oct. 8 against the Irma Chargers at the Cochrane Arena. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
