It was a game of two firsts and both of them shone brightly upon the Cochrane Chaos junior female hockey team.

The Chaos scored their first win against the defending league champion Sherwood Park Steele, Oct. 21, and did it in style with a 4-0 victory. For the Steele, it was their first loss after going undefeated in their first seven games of their 2017-18 Alberta Junior Female Hockey League (AJFHL) campaign.

The previous weekend on home turf, the Steele were dominate in a 4-2 win after taking a three goal lead in the first. Head coach Derek Loomer says Cochrane came out flat in that game but picked up the pace on home ice.

"I think the girls were a little bit disappointed and I was certainly disappointed with how we played last weekend and I thought we played a lot better today, especially in the second period."

Loomer says the Steele are a solid team and believes the two teams are closely matched but this time the Chaos played with more spark.

"I think the difference this weekend was our energy level. When we went into the game last week we were just off a bit and it was one of those games where we weren't skating to get into the plays, we weren't winning battles and there was a little bit of a lack of focus. It doesn't take very much when you're pretty even teams and one can get the advantage over the other pretty quickly."

The Chaos did get the jump here. They lead 1-0 after one then exploded with three more in the second. The Chaos largely protected the shutout in the third.

For Cochrane's Summer Gibbons it was a two-point night with one goal and an assist. Audrey Buston also scored and assisted on one and singles went to Kaylin Herman and Melanie Scholz.  Ashely Richard had two assists and Elizabth Wong had one.

Megan Parklyn earned the shutout, making 30 saves. It was her second shutout in seven games and makes her the hottest goalie in the league with 1.15 GAA and 95.7 stop percentage, aided by a solid defence.

The Chaos are currently the highest scoring team in the league with 38 goals in seven games. Eight of the top 10 scorers in the south division play for the Chaos.

Still, they sit in second behind the undefeated Central Alberta Amazons, who were the south's finalist last season.  The two teams have yet to meet, but have a pair of games in November, including one here on Nov. 17 that will be a barnburner.

The Chaos are off to Lethbridge to attempt to ground the Eagles in the first of a home-and-home series. The Eagles land here Nov. 3.
