The #1 ranked Cochrane Cobras remain on track to set a new record for consecutive wins by an Alberta high school football while the Bow Valley Bobcats showed signs of promise.

Both teams entered the Rocky View Sports football league in its second week of play, last weekend, with opposite results.

The Cochrane Cobras dominated the Springbank Phoenix 40-9 in their opening game at home, Sept. 8.

That is consecutive win number 38 and momentum is building for their hopes of breaking a record that has stood since 1999. They need a win against the Bert Church Chargers this Saturday, Sept. 15 to tie the record. The game is being played at the SLS Legacy Sports Field on Sept. 15 starting at 12 noon.

Currently, the Chargers are undefeated in their first two games, beating both Chestermere and W. H. Croxford.

Should Cochrane High succeed against the Chargers, Friday, Sept. 21 could be the day the old record falls when the Cobras are on the road to take on Chestermere Cowboys.

The Bobcats fell to the George McDougall Mustangs, 43-19, in their opening game, Sept. 7.

Bobcats teammates Ethan Caldwell (47) and Connor Pointen (41) congratulate Ben Oliver on scoring his first of two touchdowns.

Lopsided as the score was, it was close until midway through the second quarter when the Mustangs held a narrow one-point lead. The Mustang took advantage of a series of turnovers to take a solid lead into the second half, while the Bobcats had a touchdown called back on a holding penalty.

The Bobcats scored TD number three late in the fourth quarter and were threatening for another when time ran out.

With the Cobras grabbing five players from their lineup and a few off-season injuries to senior players, the bench of the Bobcats has been shortened. Yet the Bobcats showed promise.

“You feel proud right now,” says co-head coach Cam Cote. “You’ve had a lot of adversity, you’re fighting a lot of different things and the guys came out and played their hearts out and really put on a heck of a good game.”

He’s impressed with how quarterback Brody Sidebottom performed in his first regular football game ever.

Sidebottom had a few picks and the defensive backs were also beat on a few key plays but Cote isn’t discouraged.

Bobcats QB Brody Sidebottom showed promise.

“That’s easy stuff to fix. The intensity was there; the effort was there, the fight and desire were there. You can’t coach all that stuff and it was nice to see that they had it.”

“We’re celebrating tonight,” says Cote, “but we have to realize, I told them, we did lose. We have to be really happy with a lot of things, but we have to play harder and strive to get a lot better.”

Ben Oliver scored two touchdowns and Ty Sutherland the other for the Bobcats.

With the win, the Mustangs remained undefeated.

The Bobcats face the Phoenix on Friday night, Sept. 14, at the SLS Legacy Sports Field. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
