The Cochrane High senior girls volleyball team has taken sole possession of first in the Rocky View Sports (RVS) league after ruining the Chestermere Cowboys' perfect match record. They've also set the stage to likely have home court advantage for the upcoming playoffs.

The Cobras dominated play for most of the match winning the first game, 25-18, before fending off a Cowboys comeback late in the second to win 25-21. That lull continued in the third game that the Cowboys won 25-18, but the Cobras dominated the fourth and final game with a convincing 25-16 win.

Up until that match the Cobras and Cowboys were tied for first but now it's only the Cobras who are undefeated in regular season matches and have only lost two games in all, one to both the Cowboys and the Springbank Phoenix.

Cobras head coach Mike Sieben says the Cobra's solid volleyball program helps groom players before they reach senior high play and even with only three grade 12 players in the mix are a force on the court.

"We have players who have been playing for a long time. They've been playing at a high level so when you get them together you can have success and you don't really have to teach many fundamentals so you can get right into the strategy."

The Cobras only have two matches left in the regular season and face the George McDougall Mustangs and Bow Valley Bobcats before playoffs start Nov. 1.

Meanwhile th Cobras seniors boy team is also on top of their division, winning all four of their matches and only losing one game to Airdrie's WH Croxford. They shut down the Cowboys, 3-0, on the road last night. The Cobras are being chased by Mustangs and the two teams meet here for the first time next Wednesday.

RVS playoffs start Nov. 1 with the finals set for Nov. 8 for both the senior girls and boys teams. Zone playoffs go Nov. 17-18 and the provincials are being held Nov. 23-25.
