A win last night over the Springbank Phoenix has given the undefeated Cochrane Cobras senior girls varsity soccer team first place in the Rocky View Sports league.

The Cobras beat the Phoenix, 2-0, to spoil their perfect record in divisional play.

The make-up game at the SLS Legacy Sports Field also doubled as a “pink” game. Proceeds from the 50-50 were donated to breast cancer research.

Cobras head coach Carolyn Mcleod praises her players for taking the initiative.

“These girls came up with this idea on the weekend that they wanted to raise money for cancer and do a Pink Game. They did it all on their own. They got all the pink stuff and got us suited up. It was pretty sweet.”

The Cobras play their last regular season game this Thursday on the road against fourth-place Bert Church. Bert Church is in town later today (Oct. 16) to face the struggling Bow Valley Bobcats.

The second-place Phoenix have finished their regular season and now wait in abeyance to see who they will match up against in next week’s playoffs. They’re being closely chased by a surging Chestermere Lakers team, who just last weekend won a bronze in the zone finals.

Coach Mcleod has her eye on the momentum being built by the Lakers.

“Chestermere is coming on. They are riding a wave from the weekend. They got bronze (in zones) and they’re going to be a force in divisionals, I think. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw them later on in the playoffs. Of all the teams that we’ve beaten so far, they almost have the most grit and they’re starting to peak near the end of the season.”

Zone finals

The CHS Cobras came home with the silver in the ASAA South Central Zone Finals won by host Holy Trinity Academy (HTA), in Okotoks, Oct. 12-13.

The HTA Falcons took a 2-0 lead in the final and while the Cobras fought back they fell short 2-1.

“They were very strong,” says Mcleod. “They had pretty tough girls and the conditions were terrible.”

Prior to that, the Cobras didn’t allow any goals in their first three games.

In round-robin play, the Cobras beat Chestermere, 4-0, and Canmore, 3-0. In the semifinals, they shut out the Phoenix, 2-0.

The Monday night matchup was declared a "Pink Game" in support of breast cancer research.
