Last weekend, the Cochrane Chaos showed why they are the top team in the south division of the Alberta Junior Female Hockey League (AJFHL). Now they are set to face off in the south final.

With an 8-1 shellacking of the Calgary Jag on Mar. 2, the Chaos swept a best-of-three series and are preparing to meet the Central Alberta Amazons.

The series opens in Penhold this Saturday with Game Two here at the SLS Family Sports Centre on Sunday, Mar. 9 at 4:15 p.m. If required, game 3 goes on Tues. Mar. 12, also here in Cochrane at 7:45 p.m.

Chaos goalie Manon Tetrault got the start against the Jags and faced only 16 shots in a game that saw the Chaos control much of the play. All season long, the Jags relied heavily upon top-notched goaltender Shen Justason. Scoring eight goals against her was the breakout the Chaos had been seeking.

"The last two games we played against them she just had our number," says Chaos head coach Derek Loomer. "On Saturday, we had some good chances and started to break through. Once we did, I think the enthusiasm the Jags were displaying started to wane a bit and our chances just got better and better."

Scoring was spread through the Chaos lines with two goals coming from Autumn Kehler and singles by Ryann Altwasser, Audrey Buston, Summer Gibbons, Kaylin Herman, Aspen Kozak and Rebecca Toney. Brette Matheson assisted on three and Kaylin Herman on two. Carels Brooklyn, Summer Gibbon and Taylor Joerissen got the other assists.

Loomer expects a faster game against the Amazons, whom the Chaos met in the south final last year.

"They are a little bit tighter defensively and a little bit more talented hockey club so I don't expect we'll get the same number of scoring chances, so we need to make the best of the ones we do get."

The Amazons wrapped up their series against the Calgary Titans with a 5-4 win on Mar. 2.

The defending champion Sherwood Steele and Edmonton Wolves are facing off in the north final.

The winners of both series advance to the league’s best-of-five provincial championship.
