With two wins under their belt over the weekend, the top team in the south division of the Alberta Junior Female Hockey League (AJFHL) now needs to get into a playoff state-of-mind.

It took overtime for the Cochrane Chaos to beat the Calgary Jags, 3-2, before shutting out the Lethbridge Eagles, 6-0, on Feb. 17. The wins leave the Chaos seven points ahead of both the Calgary Titans and Central Alberta Amazon, who both ended their regular seasons with losses. It also gives them home-ice advantage in the south division playoffs.

In the Feb. 16 matchup, Jags goalie Shen Justason had another solid performance and produced an impressive 0.945 save percentage on upwards of 70 shots by the Chaos.

"I think we dominated most of the game but ended up having to go to overtime to win it," says Chaos head coach Derek Loomer. "Their goalie played just outstanding and stood on her head. Shots were 28 to three just in the second period and probably close to 70 shots overall and we ended up with three goals out of it. Our girls played hard all three periods and came through with the win."

The Lethbridge Eagles struggled with only one win on the season and they seemed disheartened in their season finale, making it a slow-paced game.

Still, Sunday's win by the Chaos marked Jenna Weseen's fourth shutout of the season, leaving her with a 1.68 GAA and .93 save percentage in her 25 starts.

Now the playoff warpaint needs to be applied as the Chaos attempt to win the south and earn a second crack at winning their first provincial title.

"I'm looking forward to getting into playoffs so we can play at the level that we know we really can," says Loomer.

It's the Jags the Chaos will face in the first round in a best-of-three series that opens here Saturday night in Totem One of the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m.

Game two goes in Calgary on Mar. 2 and, if necessary, returns here the following day.

Loomer says the Jags attempt to capitalize on their solid forecheck and there are a few scorers the Chaos will have to cover closely.

"I expect it will be a little bit more of a challenge against the Jags, but hopefully we can convert our opportunities a little bit better."

The shots faced by the Chaos could be nominal and that also has its challenges.

"Our goalies have to be really focused and stay in the game whether they are getting shots or not."

Buston breaks 20-goal mark

Chaos leading scorer Audrey Buston broke the 20 goal mark in the final two games of the regular season. She notched No. 20 on Saturday against the Jags, then scored two on Sunday to finish with 22 goals and 15 assists for a total of 37 points.

Faith Gette scored her 19th on Sunday to finish with 31 points.
