The Cochrane Cobras may have won the semifinal match against the Bow Valley Bobcats, 4-2, but both teams are advancing to the Rocky View Schools (RVS) medal rounds this Thursday.

The Cobras took a healthy 4-0 lead in the Oct. 17 semis before the Bobcats dug down deep and scored two in the second half in a stellar comeback effort.

Bobcats head coach Rob Makkreel says the Cobras were simply the better team with more experienced soccer players, but he's proud of his squad.

"Our girls play hard and they don't give up. We're missing two strong players, and that's the difference, but you know what, there's no complaint. I'm proud of my girls and they played well. Our goals was to be in one of the finals and that's where we're heading."

Cobras coach Carolyn McLeod wasn't sure how the season would pan out for her team this year because there were so many unknowns and several young players, But they've pulled through and only had one loss and finished on top. She says they have one player out with a concussion, but otherwise they have a healthy bench of 22 players coming into the RVS finals and zones.

She was impressed with how the Bobcats fought back after being down 4-0.

"Kudos for them to play right through to the end. When you're down 4-0 it's pretty hard to think that you'll be able to comeback. But when it got to 4-2 it got a little scarier and we made a couple more changes to finish the game.

With Springbank Phoenix winning the other semifinal match against the Bert Church Chargers, 3-0, last night. it's a rematch between the top two teams in the regular season. The Cobras lost to the Phoenix in their only loss of the regular season and it's a team they believed would be their biggest chanllenge to beat this season.

The Bobcats will be playing the Chargers for bronze and it also should be a close matchup. In their only meeting of the season the game end in a 0-0 tie.

The Bobcats play at 4 p.m. and the Cobras at 5:45 p.m. Both games are at the Spray Lake Sawmills Legacy Sports Field.

They'll be little time to contemplate the outcome of the RVS finals: the South Central zone finals start Friday and carry on into Saturday.
