Days after a scout from the Okotoks Oilers caught a Cochrane Generals game, the Alberta Junior Hockey League team has added Colton Wong to their reserve list.

The solid two-way forward of the Gens will now potentially be hitting the ice with his brother Austin and Cochrane's Kyle Gordon for a few games and it could happen as early as this weekend.

Oilers head coach Tyler Deis says the club is pretty excited about having Wong as an affiliate player.

"With Colton, it's physicality and it's his presence on the ice," says Deis. "We have a pretty young team, so if we get a chance to get him out there he'll add a presence on the ice and his maturity as a player."

Wong is 20 and that limits his opportunity to play because the Oilers are only able to carry six 20-year-olds on their game roster. Still, with the Generals on a bye week and the Oilers playing at home Friday and Saturday, this just may be the week.

"We haven't got him up for a game yet, but we've got some injuries so we want to get him up here pretty soon."

Wong, 20, is in his third season with the Generals and is an alternate captain.

At the Jan. 13 Gens' game, an Oilers scout was in the stands and it was later confirmed by Head Coach Derek Donald that he was there to address the potential of adding Wong as an affiliate. Donald said he would never stand in the way of a player getting this opportunity.

He does, though, remain active with the Gens.

Donald praises Wong on his two-way play. Wong is a solid 185 lbs. and stands 6'2" and he's often shuffled from line-to-line, depending on what is needed in any given situation. That flexibility has proven to be valuable for the Gens.

Wong's younger brother Austin, 17, is in his second season with the Oilers, joining the roster early after a 44 goal, 31 assist season with the AC Avalanche 'AAA' minor midget season. He opted to forego the WHL and has instead been recruited by Harvard University and will join the Crimsons in the 2019-20 season. He's the first Oiler ever recruited by Harvard.

The Oilers are currently at the top of the AJHL south division standings and this season have been getting the upper hand on the always challenging Brooks Bandits.

"This season we've played very well against them. They're a good club so our players get pretty excited to play against them. The guys get up for those games."
