It's been a landmark year for the Cochrane Curling Club in their new home at the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre and the future looks bright for the sport.

'A' Winners: Derek Lylyk, Kimberly Wheelans, Todd Bolianatz and Jennifer Green.

The club finished their season last weekend with their mixed bonspiel that attracted 24 teams, with about a third coming from outside of the community.

In the end, it was the Derek Lylyk rink of Calgary North Hill who won the event with teammates Kimberly Wheelands, Todd Bolianatz and Jennifer Gagnon. Cochrane's Herb Smith came second in the 'A' with teammates Kathy Ellert, and Rick and Brenda Makowichuk.

The Scott Egger rink, a Cochrane/Calgary combo won the 'B' and Cochrane's Mike Buxton rink came second. The 'C' winner from Jill Hawker's North Hill rink and Cochrane's Alicia Brooks rink won the 'D'.

'B' Winners: Scott Egger, Cindy-Mintenko-Blackman, Warren Hall, Donna Hall, Janice Fong.

Barb Gibson, the club's managing director, says it was a great way to end the season. It follows a successful ladies bonspiel of 24 teams and the 32-team men's event.

Visiting curlers have been impressed, she says.

"There are quite a few here from other clubs and they're loving the ice. They're all saying it's like arena ice."

The mixed attracted a junior team and two new teams playing in their first ever bonspiel.

"They're thrilled. In fact, they're coming back to play in our leagues next year. It's been really great. It was a good bonspiel."

'C' Winners: Rob Aitken, Jill Aitken, Jill Hawker, Mike Spiers.

It was also a busy weekend elsewhere for local curlers with several teams playing in Lethbridge, Calgary and Red Deer.

Twenty-one new teams joined the club this season and some teams have already put down deposits for 2018-19.

"Now we're getting set for next season and we're already getting teams that are wanting to join us next season. So I think we'll have an even better season next year.

League registration opens in August, with play beginning in October.

'D' Winners: Bob Brooks, Marnie Shipley, Tom McFadden, Alicia Brooks.

There is one more huge event to cap off curling before the ice is pulled. As of last weekend, 57 teams had registered for the city championships that's open to 13 Calgary area clubs to compete in six categories. The single knockout event will be the largest bonspiel yet the at club and Gibson says it would have been nearly impossible to do host at the old four-sheet rink.
