“¿Dónde es la fiesta?” you ask.

This weekend, a Mexican Fiesta charged atmosphere will be enjoyed between throwing rocks at the annual ladies bonspiel of the Cochrane Curling Club.

Thirty-two teams are in the mix this year and that may well be a record.

Guidel Ziegler, of the organizing committee, says the world-class curling facility is attracting many curlers and when you combine that with wholehearted hospitality and fun-charged atmosphere of the bonspiel you have a winning combination.

It all starts Friday night (Feb. 22) with three draws and continues through Saturday and most of Sunday. Joining local teams in the event are those from across Southern Alberta, including Lethbridge, Airdrie, Calgary and Cremona, she says.

The curling centre will be decorated in a Mexican theme, pinatas and all. Some of the teams may dress to suit the occasion while curling but the majority will likely save them for the always anticipated Saturday night banquet.

Special events like this are good for the community, she points out. They book rooms, eat in our restaurants and enjoy a little shopping while here. They may even return for a future visit when they discovery everything Cochrane has to offer.

Ziegler says support from local businesses has been amazing.

“A number of businesses have been very generous and we appreciate their support.”
