Five Cochrane football players have made the cut for the Southern Alberta team in the upcoming Senior Bowl, it was announced Monday.

Quarterback Tae Gordon, runningbacks Kane Boklaschuk and Brad Hillier, receiver Zach Rabe and defensive lineman Dylan Gingrich-Hadley will all be playing their last game at the high school level in the Senior Bowl, being staged McMahon Stadium, May 22.

Seven Cochrane players in all participated in the camp, run by the coaching staff of the Calgary Colts Junior Football team while South team coaches observed. That included Rob McNab, the team's head coach and offensive coordinator, who is also offensive coordinator for the  Cochrane High Cobras

"It gives the coaching staff for the Southern Alberta team a chance to observe and evaluate," says McNab, " because  if we were coaching right now it's hard to evaluate at the same time and make a fair pick."

McNab was impressed with the calibre of the play he saw on the field

"It's been very good, very competitive; these kids have all got a lot to prove," says McNab. "They worked very hard in their seasons and off-seasons and this is kind of the pinnacle of their high school careers. A lot of them have signed on to play at the university and junior levels. For some of them it will be the last game they ever play but hopefully they'll continue playing in some form."

Of the five Cochrane players, three, Rabe, Gingrich-Hadley and Boklaschuk, have already signed with the University of Calgary Dinos.

Brad Hillier was the lone Bow Valley Bobcat to participate in the tryouts and while leaving the field Sunday said he saw room for improvement in his game but had fun slicing through the holes made for him by those trying out for the o-line, considering it the highest calibre football he has played to date.

Forty-one players in all made the cut from the120 who tried out.

Another Cobras coach, Jim Forrest, will be defensive co-ordinator for the South team.

The Cobras have a history of forming part of the coaching staff for the game, based upon the success of their program.

"Because we come out of our league successful we always get a berth into this coaching staff and we always have somebody showing up."

The Senior Bowl is the premier high school all-star event in Alberta and gives the players to showcase theitr talents prior to the beginning of post-secondary play.

Last year, the South won the 27th annual game, 39-6, on the road in Edmonton. Through the course of its history, the south has won 14 times, the north 12 times and one game ended in a tie.
