You will be able to enjoy a night of laughter this Saturday (February 17) and all for a great cause.

The Cochrane Cougars Recreational Hockey League is hosting a comedy night at Frank Wills Hall to help keep costs down so all youth have an opportunity to hit the ice.

The league continues to grow, shares Program Director of the Association, Cheryl Mckay. The recreational hockey league has been in existence since 1995 and has 110 players currently registered from 4 to 17 years old. There is no shortage of kids that want to join but ice times and keeping costs down can be challenging. "The ultimate goal is to keep offering our program to more kids in need."

If you haven't heard of the rec league before the Cougars offer all youth (boys and girls) an opportunity to play by fostering the love of the good ol' hockey game rather than focusing on the competitive side. The non-contact hockey league has one practice and one game week combining play both in and outdoors.

Nolan James, 12, who plays for the Cochrane Cougar Peewee team loves his teammates and the fact the league keeps him active. James has been playing with the Cougars for the past seven years and says he has no desire to move into Cochrane Minor Hockey. "I am happy to stay with the Cougars. Honestly, it's super enjoyable and awesome. If you're not looking for the stress of competitive hockey they can join the rec team which isn't as stressful on people and it's fun."

Mckay adds funds raised from ticket sales will be used for equipment and offsetting ice costs. "We have equipment we set aside for families who might need it that has been donated by other families but we also provide goalie equipment and other gear that kids might need that may be more cost prohibitive for some."

Saturday night's evening out includes three comedians and a burger bar with a number of toppings. Doors will open at 5:30 pm with dinner between 6 and 7:30 pm.
