There is no question of the football prowess of Jon Cornish in his nine-year career with the Calgary Stampeders.

What makes the announcement of his induction into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame special for Cochrane, though, is his generous involvement with many Cochrane causes over the years.

Today, the all-star running back and two-time Grey Cup winner with the Calgary Stampeders was announced as a member of the Class of 2019 being inducted into the hall of fame.

In addition to earning many honours and setting some records in both NCAA university ball and the CFL, Cornish has been a generous supporter of many Cochrane causes. He was there when the Cochrane Minor Football Association held a gala kickoff to build an artificial turf and the Great Cochrane Outhouse Race doesn't seem complete without him being at the side of Dan Kroffat announcing the event and helping out the odd team in the uniquely fun event.

Cornish participated in several other charity events and has been a guest speaker for the Cochrane business community. He's scheduled to attend the fundraising event at which  Alex Baum is being honoured as a community builder on June 2.

In nine years with the Stamps, Cornish registered 1,026 carries for 6,844 rushing yards along with 44 touchdowns in 140 regular-season game appearances. He topped 1,000 yards in three straight seasons from 2012-14, earning the league's rushing title, earning, CFL all-star recognition and Most Outstanding Canadian honours each time.

He dominated in the 2013 campaign by rushing 1,813, the most ever recorded by a Canadian in a single season. That season he was named the CFL's Most Oustanding Player and was the recipient of the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada's athlete of the year.

A native of New Westminster, B.C., Cornish earned honours there before going on to play for the NCAA Kansas Jayhawks. He was that team's top rusher in the Big 12 Conference in his senior year and set a single-season school record of 1,457. In 2018, the Jon Cornish Trophy was created to annually recognize the top Canadian-born player in NCAA football.

The Class of 2019 is being inducted on Aug. 9 in Hamilton and the Hall of Fame game is being hosted by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats the next day.
