A pair of wins over the weekend have put the Cochrane Generals in first place in the south division of the Heritage Junior Hockey League (HJHL) but this race is far from over.

The Gens are tied with the High River Flyers for top spot with a game in hand and the Okotoks Bisons and Coaldale Copperhead are banging on the door, both sitting only one point behind with two games-in-hand on the Gens.

Jarod Domingo leaves a Strathmore player flat on his ass.

The Gens beat the Bisons, 4-1, on the road Friday before a tight 3-2 win over the Strathmore Wheatland Kings here at Totem One, Jan. 13.

The gens orchestrated an odd-man rush that saw Scott Shugg find a wide open Colton Wong, who went down low and powered it into the net late in the second period.

All the scoring took place in the second. The Gens opened up a 2-0 lead with Austin Keller connecting from the point, assisted by Talus Hume and Slater Ransom. Hume scored his 24th of the season from linemate Slater Ransom on a powerplay goal. All seemed well until the Kings surged with two goals in less than two minutes to tie the match.

Rookie goal Knute Loe won his fifth game of the season and now carried a 2.55 GAA. He demonstrated his frustration after the Kings second goal by tossing his stick but was perfect between the pipes for the balance of the game.

The fate of the Gens are in their own hands, believes head coach Derek Donald, and they just have to keep winning to get a shot for first, which will give them a bye from the first round of playoffs and home ice advantage.

The Gens are on a bye week and have six games remaining in the regular season. They face the Flyers on the road on, Jan. 26, before their rematch against the Kings the next night here at Totem One on Jan. 27.

February kicks off with their final two home games against the Flyers and Kings before hitting the road to play Medicine Hat, then Strathmore to wrap up the regular season.
