Three Cochrane Generals helped the south division once again claim bragging rights in the Heritage Junior Hockey League (HJHL) all-star showdown.

On Jan. 6. Airdrie hosted the second annual league's all-star game and like last year it came down to the wire and took a shootout to decide the winner.

The South Division came from behind to tie the game 4-4 in the last minute of play, a similar scenario to last year. Seven shootout rounds later, the South won it.

Gens co-captains Brandon Aab and Chris Sambrook, as well as defenceman Jordon Marks, all gave strong performances, says Gens coach Travis McMillan, who spectated.

"It was a great game," says McMillan."Airdrie did a fantastic job in hosting and the crowd seemed to be enjoying themselves, which is always good to see."

"Our guys did a good job, but were probably a little bit tired from the road trip to Coaldale the night before."

Aab scored one for the south and has now found the scoreboard in all three of his games since returning to the lineup.

McMillan says the game is a step in the right direction and believes the league could benefit from adding something for prospects.

"Perhaps we could have a blackout weekend with a Prospects Game on Saturday and the All-Star Game the next day."

Gerber Named HJHL Second Star for December

The HJHL has released its three stars of the month for December and the second star belongs to Gens goalie Erik Garber.

Garber, 19, had a 4-1-0 record during the month of December, leading all goalies with a .944 save-percentage, while posting a 1.81 goals-against average along with one shutout.

His highlight of the month came on Dec. 9, when he stopped all 47 shots in a win over the Okotoks Bisons.

Medicine Hat forward Cooper Hilworth was named the first star for posting 13 goals and a total of 18 points in just eight games to become the top HJHL points producer in December. Another Medicine Hat player, Chandler Aleman, was the third star with 10 goals and six assists in eight games.
