A fun free event is happening this Saturday (April 8) for girls new or already playing hockey.

The annual spring event ESSO Fun Day is broken into two sessions; Lorne Bremner, Peewee Girls Coach, says the morning is geared for girls 4-10 years in age that are new to the sport while the afternoon is for those with playing experience.

"In the morning we have two ice sessions. We invite the brand new players/skaters or a year and under just getting going, that is the ESSO Fun Day; we will have on ice and a dry land session in the morning. Afternoon is experienced kids it's an actual development session; we are inviting them out it's a chance to get out with girls, that one is you've actually played before. We're going to run you through some drills, some stuff to keep in mind for summer so you can remember some drills when you are going out to Sticks N' Pucks that kind of thing, they will also have a dryland session in the afternoon which will be yoga."

Chaos Coach, Laura Olsen and AC Avalanche Coach, Kenton Levesque will be running the sessions along with a helping hand from some U of C and Chaos team players. Bremner, says they are getting closer to his goal of having girls hockey completely ran by females,"the whole idea....we will get there, is eventually to have no men on the ice."

The league is growing quickly; Bremner, adds it is becoming known throughout Canada that growth in minor hockey is happening in the female stream.

Pre-registration will begin April 8 so the league has a good grip on count for the 2017/18 season. During the sessions, Bremner shares a quick presentation for interested parents will be made to discuss advantages of female hockey and remove any misconceptions parents may have.

The morning session of ESSO Fun Day is a registered event and you can do so here, for those experienced players you must also register at this link, both sessions take place at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre.
